"Now, THAT is the team to watch out for next year." The previous statement was echoed in reference to Florida by many well respected AC coaches and players in 2005. Despite never beating any of the 2005 Big Four (UGA, NCSU, UVA, UNC), or even being considered a front runner of the region in 2005, the Florida ladies have put together quite the force for the 2006 season. It appears that FUEL has retained the majority of its roster from last year and any notable losses were not noticed at CCC. Florida is bordering on forming an A and B team and will use its shear numbers to form a very strong, deep team. It helps tremendously that Steven Johnson (Hot and Sweaty) is returning as their coach and offering much needed support, consistency and knowledge to this women's program. But, this women's team has a very solid supporting cast that spent a considerable amount of time playing together this past summer on Hot and Sweaty (Tiffany Waters #69, Sara Puyana #13, and Joanna Neville #19) and also adds the big flicks of Erin Brown (#11) and Robyn Gallo (#17). Cathy Marshall made numerous athletic grabs throughout the finals and semifinals at CCC and will be one of Brown's and Gallo's main receivers in the spring. Florida plays a really interesting zone that borders on a cross between a clam and a trap sideline cup. They pride themselves on their unique defensive setups and if they can find the one that clicks, it may just lead them to glory. It is only a guess, but Florida will probably get to as many AC tournaments (FWC, QCTU, Terminus, Southerns, and Easterns) as humanly possible and make a serious bid for one of those 2-3 bids to Columbus, OH, for the UPA Championships. |
