As we all know, in 2005 the Atlantic Coast fell victim to a bid allocation process that many will argue is outdated. Even though at one point the AC region had 4 teams in the top ten of the NUMP poll (4,6,7,9), the region was only allocated one bid. NCSU emerged victorious during that one eventful weekend in April and represented our region well all the way through quarters in Corvallis. 2005 also marked the graduation of Callahan top-five finalist and 2004/2005 All-Region player Molly Doyle, her main receiver Nicole Chauvigue (also a 2004 and 2005 All-Region player), and Jaga's second best handler Johanna Vidales. Additionally Amanda Hobbs transferred to UNC. Therefore, this year may be labeled as a rebuilding year for the ladies in Raleigh, NC. Teresa Rouse (#10) returns as one of Jaga's more skillful players and was a standout defender for them last year. Not only did she gain experience with Olio (Club Mixed Quarterfinalists) but so did Sara Immel (#13) – who will be NCSU’s other dependable offensive threat. Christina Beauchamp (24), Beth Harrington (21), and Alyssa Hopkins (31) will play a considerable amount of points as well and will have to perform well this year if NCSU is going to make a bid for the UPA Championships. Overall, most will regard NCSU as in a rebuilding phase, but if they get the right experience and all click at the right time, they have the talent and potential to run with the "older" programs of the AC region. It will also be interesting if Beth Stagner of Backhoe coaches this team again – as her coaching skills added a lot of arsenal to the team last year. Look for NCSU to be attending many east coast tournaments such as QCTU, Terminus, Southerns, and Easterns in their drive to return to the championships for a third year in a row. |
