| Oregon Fugue came in fourth in the Northwest last season after losing a close game to Washington in the game to go. Since then, the team graduated a number of its star players, including 2003 Callahan winner Chelsea Dengler, Meryl Kusyk, and Mary Gray.
Nonetheless, this year the young roster benefits from the juniors experience of a number of its players and has some great athletes on the roster. Tobey Beaver joined the team last season as a junior transfer and made her mark as a confident handler. This year she should lead the team’s backfield, which includes 2005 NW Freshman of the Year Lauren Prince #21, Sarah Moore #29, and UW transfer student Molly Suver. Beaver, Prince, Moore, and Suver all played ultimate in high school. Veteran players Cheri "Churro" Young #7 and Jane Wilson-Moses #12 are also leaders on the team. Young is an especially tenacious defender, taking her cues on laying out from Dengler. Oregon will be attending some of the most competitive tournaments this season as it prepares itself to make a run for one of the Northwest's three bids to the championships this year. |
