| Stanford Superfly won the UPA College Championships in 2005, defeating Washington in the finals 15-12. This was the program's fifth national title in less than a decade and its second championship in the last three years.
The team now returns most of its 2005 roster and is preparing to defend its title. Notable losses from the roster include 2004 Callahan runner-up Jennifer Burney, Shirley Wu, and Jessica Guh. Nonetheless, Superfly's core remains and will be lead by a trio of fifth year players: 2005 Callahan runner-up Enessa Janes (#7), Lauren Casey (#11), and Hannah Griego (#10). All three were recognized as top players in the country last year in the NUMP All-College voting. Janes and Casey were also recognized as All-Region players in the Northwest last season. Moreover, the team's real strength is in its depth. From top to bottom, Stanford prides itself in fielding an athletic team with solid fundamentals. This year's rookie class fits right in to that model and includes players with some previous experience too (two former B-teamers and one high-school juniors player from Amherst HS). Veteran players to especially watch out for include receivers Alicia Dantzker (#13), Christina Contreras (#33), and Anna Hare (#94). Stanford should be one of the teams to beat this season, both in its region and in the nation. |
