| Last year, UC-Santa Cruz’s squad handed Stanford one of its two losses for the season and was a major force in the Northwest region. Unfortunately, graduation took its toll on the top-heavy roster and the team will especially miss Claire Meneely, Jamie McPike, and Bonnie McPike.
Nonetheless, there are still a number of top players left to take the helm this season. Lillian Berla was one of the main handlers on the team last season and she plays with confidence gained by competing with the juniors Worlds team in 2004. Tegwyn Lewis-Pine and Zoe Hitchner are also athletic players; Lewis-Pine is a squirrely defender and Hitchner uses her height well as a receiver. Captain Carmen Ausserer rounds out the experience on the team. Maggie Mathias also remains as the team's coach, bringing strategy to UCSC from her club team Fury. The question facing Sol will be how its rookies step up to fill the holes left in the roster. This year will probably be a bit of a rebuilding year for the squad, but with the talent that it still has, no one should overlook UC-Santa Cruz. |
