| Last year UCSD finished second in the Southwest region. Despite beating Colorado on Saturday at Regionals, UCSD lost to Colorado in the finals and missed out on the single bid to the UPA College Championships.
The team lost ten players from its roster last year, including four of the team's starters (Tracy Woo, Tenise Ambler, Alia Schoettgen, and Manisha "Slap" Daryani). While graduation and study abroad programs may have limited the number of returners on the team, most of the veteran players have experience playing with the club team Safari. Six Psychos were on Safari's roster at the UPA Club Championships and more practiced with the team during the fall. These players include the team's on-field leaders Kelly "Muff" Jarvis (#7), Vivi Mai (#24), Heather "Ros" Kinkead (#50), and Shelley "Cecil" Dubois (#53). Other players to watch are Laura "Beignet" Wishingrad (#10), and Jeanie "Major" Albrecht (#9). Specifically, Jarvis and Kinkead handle the disc with confidence and athletes Mai and Wishingrad help continue the flow downfield. UCSD also has a crop of athletic rookies joining the roster who should fit in well with UCSD's emphasis on playing pressure person-defense. Traditionally, UCSD plays both a 3 and a 4 person cup when the conditions favor zone defenses. Despite the losses to its 2005 roster, the team is still one of the top three teams in the region (with Colorado and UCLA) and should be a main contender for one of the two bids from the Southwest. |
