UNC was revered as one of the front runners of the AC region last year with NCSU, UGA, and UVA. Despite being ranked #2 in the nation at one point during the season and beating eventual national qualifier NCSU at the Carolina sectional championships, UNC experienced a disappointing loss in the semis at Regionals. That left a very bad taste in a lot of Pleiades' mouths and this year they are not going to settle for anything less than a bid to the UPA Championships. Last year closed with the graduation of Sara Stanley (2004 and 2005 All Region Player) and Kelsey Clark (star defender) – those will be two roster holes that will be difficult to fill, but not impossible. Pleiades spent the greater part of the fall concentrating on forming their first ever B team. After cuts were made and individual practices started, the A team had a few gatherings to get things in place for CCC. It would be pretty safe to say that UNC had a fine showing at CCC going 5-2, losing in the semifinals to the eventual champions. This year Pleiades will have a number of standout players including Lindsey Hack (#23), from the women's club finalist Backhoe, and a solid group of ladies that played on Olio together (Club Mixed Quarterfinalists) – Kate Morrison (#84), Ellie Bolas (#12), Hannah Giles (#16), and NCSU transfer Amanda Hobbs (#20). In addition to these four players, UNC will be looking to other players such as Jen Waldrup (#11) and rookie Charliss Fenton (#14) to handle a portion of the offensive load and Amber Nalley (#1) and Lauren Frank (#26) to bear tougher defensive assignments. Finally, UNC adds Jared Inselmann (Ring of Fire) as their head coach this year - bringing a more aggressive style of ultimate to a team previously marked by complacency. Not only is Pleiades looking to take one the region's spots to Columbus, OH, but they are also looking to be competitively nationally. This season, the UNC ladies will be finding themselves at their home tournament, QCTU, and also Stanford Invite and Centex. |
