| Washington Element took the third spot in the region last year and then made it all the way to the finals of the UPA College Championships in its first ever appearance at the championships. Despite beating Stanford in pool play on Friday, UW lost in the finals to Stanford 15-12.
It will be difficult to fill the shoes of 2004 Callahan winner Miranda Roth, who is now out of eligibility and will be contributing to the team in the role of coach this season. The team will also miss veteran players KrisAnn Schmitz, Carla Fowler, Emily Grad, Erin Gallagher, and Jackie Williams. Nonetheless, the team still has captains Melina Coogan (#17) and Lisa Niemann (#3), both of whose experience and desire will help carry the team. Other returners include Kara Lowe (#9), Heather Brown (#11), and Susan Shortreed (#24). Moreover, the team gained two top juniors players in Claire Suver and Jenny Abegg. Suver helped lead her juniors team to win the 2005 Youth Club Championship and Abegg was on the Canadian juniors World team. Taking cues from the strategies of championship club team Riot, UW's zone defenses frustrated many teams last year and its two handler zone offense was successful against other team's zone defenses. UW will be working extra hard this season to prove that it is a program worthy of respect even without Roth on the roster. With the talent that it retains, the team should do just that. |
