Despite coming in 4th at Southwest Regionals (missing a bid to the UPA College Championships), Colorado was ranked 16th in the nation during 2004. In 2005, Kali is coached by Mike Whitaker, 2003 Callahan runner-up and current club player on Johnny Bravo, and returns its main players. Captains Alex Snyder and Carolyn Matthews return to Colorado after a fall season playing with the women's club team Rare Air that finished 6th at the 2004 UPA Club Championships. Snyder and Matthews both handle for Kali and often look to break the mark to jump-start the offense. Snyder has an especially powerful forehand that penetrates deep to fast receivers. The team also hopes to return receiver Anne "Pogo" Pogoriler, who is still working out the terms of her eligibility in graduate school. If Pogoriler is eligible, Kali will gain another Rare Air player who is a fast, confident, and reliable cutter. Not including Pogoriler, the team returns 7 of the players that were on the team in 2003 when Kali made the semifinals of the UPA College Championships. That experience should help the team as it recruits and trains the newer players that fill out the roster. Colorado has long been known as a "run-and-gun" team, relying on speed and endurance to wear teams down with its fast pace game. High-altitude training in Boulder, CO, also helps provide an advantage when Kali matches up against teams used to lower elevations. However, this year and last have seen Colorado with a small roster that could hinder the team late in tournaments. Despite not competeting in any fall tournaments, Colorado is attending two of the most competitive college tournaments of the season: UCSD's President's Day Tournament and Centex. Before the team has to face the toughest teams in the country at those two tournaments, Colorado will get to test itself against regional competition UC-San Diego and Arizona at New Year's Fest in Tempe, AZ. If Colorado hopes to earn the single spot to the UPA College Championships from the Southwest region, it will have to prove itself against the tough competition of its season's schedule.
