Last year UC-Davis won the UPA College Championships, so the team's returning players know what it takes to win.

However, the team lost much of its core from the team that beat Carleton College 15-13 in the finals, including Julie Baker, Brooke Babineau, Katja Bloomquist, Stephanie "Petra" Krajewski, Danielle Manning, and coach Alicia Barr. Nonetheless, the two current captains, Lindsey Riemenschneider and Sarah Pitiglio, were both big playmakers on last year's team and will continue to lead the Pleiades. Pitiglio played during the club season, with Bay Area team Heroine, and she handles the disc with confidence and grace. Riemenschneider will also handle for Davis this year and can be relied upon for athletic plays. Her true claim to fame is being the team's top defensive force, so expect Riemenschneider to be matched up against the top handlers of Pleiades' opponents. Victoria "Chuckie" Wilk is also a handler to watch as her throws (especially her cross-field hammer) have blossomed under the tutelage of thrower-extraordinaire Baker. The real question for Davis this season will be whether they can find the personnel to fill the go-to receiver role that 5'11" Manning will leave behind.

On offense, Davis loves give-and-go passes that generate unmarked hucks downfield. In seasons past, the handlers have especially used an away cut out to space to get the disc. In 2004, Barr and Baker took note from their club team Fury's 2003 UPA Club Championship win, and as a result Davis has a tough four-person cup that does a good job of containing the disc and challenging the comfort zones of the swing.

Tournament Updates:

  • At the Santa Barbara Invite, the team was 3-3 for the weekend, finishing second in its pool to UC-Santa Barbara and losing in quarterfinals to Stanford.
  • President's Day saw UC-Davis with a 2-3 record, beating Yale and Oregon
  • At the Stanford Invite, the team won its pool over Brown and UCLA but lost to Stanford in the semifinals
