UltiVillage 's Clip of the Day for Februray 23nd features Holly Greunke (#24)

This is the second season that Greunke has been co-captain of Wisconsin Belladonna. She has been an impact player for the past four years and hopes to help lead the team back to the UPA Championships this spring. Wisconsin played especially well during this month's Trouble in Vegas and Greunke's co-captain Dana Gerrits commented that, "our third place finish this weekend at Vegas is a sure sign of the hard work that we have been doing all fall under Holly's guidance and leadership." Greunke played on a local women's team, Madison Jazz, this past summer with some of her college teammates, working to improve their cohesion for the college season. Read below to find out more information about her ultimate beginnings, history, skills/profile, and upcoming college season.

Ultimate Beginnings:
What other sports do you have a background in and when did you play them?

I played softball every summer through high school, volleyball as a freshman and sophomore in high school, track as a sophomore and junior and cross country as a senior in high school.
Where and when did you first learn to play ultimate?
My dad taught me how to throw a backhand when I was growing up, but I first played competitive ultimate at a pick up game in Stevens Point, WI with some high school friends, and was then invited to play on their team, 2 deep.
What about the sport has made you continue to play since then?
Definitely the people. I remember my freshman year before I had gone to any tournaments I didn't want to play the following year. Then I went to President's Day and got to know my teammates and the thought of not playing has never crossed my mind since.
Who would you describe as your main mentor(s)?
Jamie Anderson, who was my captain my freshmen year. She was really intense and I could tell just from how she played how much she wanted to win, which made me play more intensely. Also Jill Hutchinson, who was my captain my sophomore year and a really great leader/teacher. And Kevin Johnson (KJ), who is the coach of my club team and has given me a lot of insight into how to be a better captain and who really pushed me hard and made me realize I can do a lot more than I think I can on the field.

Ultimate History:
What teams have you played on?
2 deep/Zen (high school), Bella Donna, and Madison Jazz (club). Plus a few different summer league and Badger State games coed teams.
What has been your greatest ultimate achievement/memory?
Winning regionals against Iowa in 2003 and making the all-region team last year.
What has been your worst (most heartbreaking, most challenging, or most embarrassing, etc.) ultimate memory?
Not winning a single game at Centex last year and losing to Iowa in the game to go at Regionals last year.
What has been the biggest challenge you have overcome to play ultimate?
Trying to lead a team while taking into account so many different levels of committment and skill. It's really hard for me to understand how it's possible to not love ultimate as much as I do.
What type of recognition/honors/awards (if any) have you received for your ultimate play?
2005 Central All-Region team

Ultimate Skills/Profile:
What position do you play? Has this differed on different teams you may have played for?
I usually handle on my college team, but I usually cut on my club team. When I play coed, I play whatever is needed.
What do you view as your strengths on the field?
I think I'm a consistent player and make good decisions most of the time. I also think I have good field sense, which makes me a good defender.
What are you working on most to improve?
My forehand huck.
What is your role on your college team (include leadership roles on and off the field)?
I'm co-captain, co-conditioning coordinator, line caller, etc.
What type of pre-game or pre-tournament rituals (if any) do you have?
None that I can think of, but I have to wear black socks when I play.

Upcoming College Season:
Describe your team's performance last year. How did that compare to previous years that you have been on the team?
We took 3rd at regionals last year. The previous year we also took 3rd, and the year before that (2003) we won regionals and took 9th at nationals in TX.
How strong do you think your college team will be this season? What are the team's biggest strengths?

Greunke handling the disc for Belladonna
I think our team is going to be really strong this year. A lot of us played club together all summer, and our rookies and really starting to step it up. We work really well together on offense.
What are your personal and team goals for the season?
My personal goal is to always be intense and never get down during games, especially toward the end of a tournament when I'm tired or if we're losing a game. Our team goal is to win regionals and make it to nationals.
What tournament are you most looking forward to with your college team? What is your favorite team tradition?
I am most looking forward to Mardi Gras and Regionals. For the past two years before regionals my team gets together and everybody has a sheet of paper with their name on it. Everyone passes their sheet around and each person writes one thing they think that person does really well and one thing they should work on. Then we go around and share. It really makes people feel good about themselves, while giving them constructive critism. Many of my teammates save their sheets and read them whenever they have a bad day.
