Lauren Casey (#11) has been the main handler for Stanford for the past three years, helping lead her team to the semifinals of the UPA College Championships in 2004 and victory in the finals of 2005. This year, she has been instrumental in Stanford's undefeated record, winning both the Santa Barbara Invite and the Stanford Invite. Casey runs Stanford's offensive with her throws, cutting, and vision, while she also often leads the team in defensive blocks. Read below to find out more information about her ultimate beginnings, history, skills/profile, and college season.
| Ultimate Beginnings: |
| What other sports do you have a background in and when did you play them? |
| Soccer (forever), and volleyball and track (high school) |
| Where and when did you first learn to play ultimate? |
|
| Stanford freshman year - I
had played a few times before, but it was not really 'learning' to play so
much as running around aimlessly throwing BBQ backhands. |
| What about the sport has made you continue to play since then? |
Casey catching in front of Andrea Romano (UCSB) at the Santa Barbara Invite 2006 |
| The people, hands down. I have found welcoming ultimate communities in every city in which I have ever spent time after learning to play. Ultimate draws a pretty diverse, but consistently fun, welcoming, and interesting group of people. There's also a lot about the sport itself that keeps me playing, like the fact that it's relatively new to most of us and there are ample opportunities to learn, adapt, and 'dork out' about strategy. Plus
its just really, really fun. |
| Who would you describe as your main mentor(s) and/or role models? |
| Definitely my coaches, who over the years have been Robin Knowler, Karen Hyun, Erin Percival, Gwen Ambler (no she didn't edit this before posting), and Jody Dozono. They are the reason that our team is so successful, and I am constantly inspired by and learning from how they coach and how they
play. |
| Ultimate History: |
| What teams have you played on? |
| Stanford Superfly and Six Trained Monkeys
(Boston Mixed) |
| What has been your greatest ultimate achievement/memory? |
| Winning College Nationals last year after losing to UW in pool play. I was so proud of our team for overcoming that pretty major mental hurdle and playing a really good, close game against UW, again, in the finals. |
| What has been your worst (most heartbreaking, most challenging, or most
embarrassing, etc.) ultimate memory? |
| Definitely losing in the semifinals of Nationals in 2004. We blew a lead late in the game and I definitely left the field feeling that I had been a big part of that loss. |
| What has been the biggest challenge/decision you have faced in playing ultimate? |
| Trying to devote any attention towards anything else.
Seriously. |
| What type of recognition/honors/awards (if any) have you received for your ultimate play? |
| 2005 Northwest All Region Team, 2005 NUMP All College
Second Team |

Ultimate Skills/Profile: |
| What position do you play? Has this differed on different teams you
may have played for? |
| Handler/Cag, nope I'm usually behind the disc. |
| What do you view as your strengths on the field? |
| My throws. |
| What are you working on most to improve? |
| My mark. |
| Do you consider yourself more of an offensive or defensive player? Why? |
| I definitely consider myself an offensive player. I love being behind the disc and looking upfield to see what the defense is giving us. Offense is all about composure, decisions, and execution - I guess I really enjoy trying to maintain the quality of all three. |
| What is your role on your college team (include leadership roles on
and off the field)? |
| I'm a pretty vocal person, so even though I'm an ex-captain I think one of my roles is as a teacher, motivator, and strategist (hopefully in a way that doesn't step on our three captains' toes). On the field, I like to lead by being consistent, making good decisions, and taking responsibility for what happens with the disc. |
| What type of pre-game or pre-tournament rituals (if any) do you have? |
| Getting something seriously stuck in my eye. Well, not really, but I did before the finals last year and it seemed to work out well. |
| College Season: |
| What were some of the biggest reasons you feel Stanford won the UPA College Championshps last year? |
| We were deep athletically and confident enough in each other to know that we could come back after a loss on Friday to play our best on Saturday and Sunday. |
| For you personally, how did winning it all in 2005 compare to winning the championships in 2003? |
| It's hard to compare them because both were
unbelievable experiences. I guess the win last year meant a little more
personally, because I had a bigger role on the team. |
| What are your personal and team goals for the season? |
| My personal goal is to help younger players develop confidence and skills, and my team goals include becoming the deepest team in the country in terms of skills and athletecism through all 22 of us, having each player feel personal responsibility for our teams' successses (and failures), and having a great time together. |
| What do you anticipate being the biggest obstacle to overcoming those goals? |
| I think one majore hurdle we might have to overcome to reach our
team potential is complacency. We only graduated 3 players from our 2005
season and there is definitely the potential to think that not much has to
change for us to do well. It hasn't been a problem yet, and most people
are able to remember how hard we have to work, and how dynamic everyone's
role must be, to keep up with the amazing competition out there in college
women's ultimate. |
| How would you describe your team's biggest strengths? |
| Our athleticism and depth, our coaches, and our mental toughness. |
| What do you most look forward to with your college team this season, as it will be your last with the team? |
Casey at the SB Invite 2006 |
| Every tournament, practice, workout,
party, etc. is somehow more meaningful to me this year knowing that it's my
last chance to be a part of such an amazingly close team. |
| What are some of your favorite team traditions? |
| Roll-out, bom-da-ley-ley (our pre-finals cheer), and sprint practice (in a love/hate kind of way). |
