| Michelle Groscost (#40) was one of Purdue's main handlers last season and helped lead her team to its first appearance at the UPA College Championships. She is back this year as a fifth year player, ready to help her team return to the championships. This is especially remarkable given that Groscost was diagnosed with lymphoma this summer and underwent chemotherapy while playing during the club season with Mojo. Mojo teammate Miriam Allersma describes Groscost as "an inspirational player" that she "felt privileged to play with." Read below to find out more information about her ultimate beginnings, history, skills/profile, and upcoming college season. |
| Ultimate Beginnings: | |
| What other sports do you have a background in and when did you play them? | ![]() Groscost at the 2005 UPA College Championships handling against Texas in pool play |
| I was pretty serious with basketball since I was about 5, and I also played softball. | |
| Where and when did you first learn to play ultimate? | |
| Purdue - I had never even heard of ultimate before I came here. | |
| What about the sport has made you continue to play since then? | |
| The people are amazing. I love the fact that it's like a little community, and you know so many people from so many different places that you would have never met otherwise. Also, I really loved challenging myself physically. If someone would have told me 6 or 7 years ago that I would love to run and push myself this much, I would have told them they were crazy. | |
| Who would you describe as your main mentor(s)? | |
| I would say my first coach, Beth, Lani Kai, and Mo were my first mentors. This year I learned so much from my club team, Mojo. Mar Mar and Meems, the coaches for Michigan, are so knowledgable, and I learned a lot about strategies, defenses, and taking care of the disc from them. | |
| Ultimate History: |
| What teams have you played on? |
| Purdue for 5 years and Mojo this past fall. |
| What has been your greatest ultimate achievement/memory? |
| Helping Purdue reach nationals for the first time in school history. |
| What has been your worst (most heartbreaking, most challenging, or most embarrassing, etc.) ultimate memory? |
| Having a disappointing Nationals last year. The most frustrating part was knowing we could have been pretty competitive if we woud have had a larger roster. |
| What has been the biggest challenge you have overcome to play ultimate? |
| Well, this past summer, I found out that I had lymphoma, a type of cancer, and had to recieve chemotherapy. I was really worried that I couldn't play; I read a lot about people really being physically affected by chemotherapy. I was so mad b/c this was the first year I had the chance to play on a club team, but I talked with one of the girls on Mojo and decided I would still try and play. Surprisingly, chemo didn't affect me that badly. I'm sure being able to get out and run and take my mind off of everything really helped in that respect, and the girls on Mojo were so awesome - we had fun with it (aka shaving a mullet and doing senior pictures at Colorado Cup when I started losing my hair). |
| What type of recognition/honors/awards (if any) have you received for your ultimate play? |
| Most valuable player at Purdue for 2005 |

Ultimate Skills/Profile: |
| What position do you play? Has this differed on different teams you may have played for? | |
| I pretty much only handle. I don't think I would even know what to do if someone told me to cut since I haven't done it in such a long time. I love running the cup and trapping on the line too. | |
| What do you view as your strengths on the field? | |
| Being lefty is a huge advantage in ultimate, so I'm pretty lucky there. My biggest strengths are being able to break and huck. | |
| What are you working on most to improve? | |
| Quickness, and hucking accuracy and distance. | |
| What is your role on your college team (include leadership roles on and off the field)? | |
| I've been Captain the last two years, this year by myself because no one else wanted to do it with me (thanks guys). I'm in charge of conditioning, which is challenging because I've always had someone telling me what to do. On the field, I try to keep the team's spirits up and keep everyone positive. | |
| What type of pre-game or pre-tournament rituals (if any) do you have? | |
| I have no particular pre-game ritual, which is ironic since I used to be very superstitous when I played basketball. I guess there was a lot of listening to NUMA last year. Kami and Jess are trying to get everyone to dance to some techno crap, but I don't know if that's going to catch on. |
| Upcoming College Season: | |
| Describe your experience at Nationals last year. How did that compare to previous tournaments of the season? | |
| The hardest part about Nationals is that you are playing quality competition every single game. Coming from the Great Lakes, we could conserve our energy during some of our games at other tournaments b/c there would only be 3 or 4 games maximum that we would have to be on our toes. At Nationals, we didn't have that luxury, and with 13 people, the 95 degree weather the first day really killed us. It was frustrating after we lost in prequarters because we ended up playing Northwestern, who we had already beat 3 times in the spring. We ended up losing on double game point after leading, in part because we were so tired, so we lost the chance to finish somewhere decent. [Purdue finished tied for 14th] | |
| How strong do you think your college team will be this year? | ![]() Groscost while playing club with Mojo in 2005 |
| I think we're going to be pretty strong this season. We did much better than I anticipated at MI Indoor this past weekend considering the fact that we hadn't really played together for about 3 months. I was pretty excited when we came back to beat Northwestern when we were down by 2 five minutes before cap instead of giving up. It's interesting because our team is very different from last year's team. Last year, pretty much only the handlers threw upfield, which got us into trouble when teams shut the handlers down. This year though, our recievers are a lot more comfortable making throws, so it should be interesting to see which direction our team takes. | |
| What are your personal and team goals for the season? | |
| We really want to make it back to Nationals this year and have a better showing. | |
| What tournament are you most looking forward to with your college team? | |
| Queen City Tune Up - It will give us a good measuring stick on what we need to work on. | |
