UC-San Diego has made it the UPA College Championships for the past 6 years straight. In 2004, the team lost in the semifinals to the eventual tournament champs, UC-Davis.

This year the team graduated a number of the players who helped the team earn a 46-6 record last year. The team will certainly miss Alicia White, Tonya Lenaburg, Amy Ruff, and Cherie Lim. Nontheless, the Psychos have 11 returners to lead the way, 6 of whom played at Club Nationals this fall. This core includes Tenise Ambler, Tracy Woo, Manisha Daryani (Slap), Kelly Jarvis (Muff), Alia Schoettgen, and Vivi Mai. Ambler and Woo are two althetic handlers who played with Rare Air during the club season. Woo is the team's mainstay as deep deep in a zone D, and her ability to be big in the air is clutch for the team. "Slap" is a fast defender who loves to lay out and has surprised teams that overlook her. Mai is also another player with great bids. Unfortunately, she has been plagued with knee injuries for the past two seasons, although with rigorous rehab, she hopes to return for the season this year at full strength.

UCSD has a new coach this season. Shar Stuht has retired from her post and Corrine "Baco" Pisacane will be replacing her. UCSD has traditionally played with a reset dump and the traditional handler, middle, deep position divisions. While they have a number of zone defenses to utilize, the team is known for tough man defense that generates turnovers.

With only one bid to Nationals from the Southwest region, UCSD will need to hold the other SW teams at bay. Still, the team's experience makes them the favorite at this point to win Regionals. It surely has the strength of schedule to have an edge, competing at the top three tournaments in the nation: President's Day, Stanford Invite, and Centex. The team can also be seen at the Santa Barbara Invitational and Tempe's New Year's Fest.

Tournament Updates:

  • At the Santa Barbara Invitational, the team finished 4th after going 5-2 for the tournament. UC-San Diego won its pool over Claremont, then lost in quarterfinals to UC-Santa Cruz. The team went on to beat UC-Berkeley and lose to UCLA in the game for 3rd place
  • UC-San Diego made the semifinals of the B bracket at the club tournament New Year's Fest in Tempe, AZ.
