Last season, UC-Santa Cruz was right with the big three from its section (UC-Davis, Stanford, and UC-Berkeley), placing higher than Berkeley at Sectionals and almost making it to the back-door game-to-go at Regionals.

Last year's team returns for the 2005 season almost entirely intact. While veterans Hadley Robinson and Ilea Smith will no longer be playing, the team's core remains. Claire Meneely leads the team, but she is backed by the formidable crew of twins Jamie and Bonnie McPike and Lillian Berla. Meneely has been recognized as an All-Region player the past three years and has now finished two seasons with Bay Area club team Fury. She and the McPike twins have been handling together for years now and move the disc effectively, including to the break side and the deep land. Juniors player Berla was a nice addition to the team last year, and she will be returning after gaining valuable experience on the USA Juniors Worlds team. Another player to watch will be sophomore Tegwyn Lewis-Pine. She impressed her teammates and opponents last year with her athleticism and steep learning curve, so this year she should be an even bigger player for the team.

Coached by Fury players, Stacey Schoemehl and Maggie Mathias, Sol runs variations on a dump-swing offense. The team's handlers like to get the disc back up the line and aren't afraid to huck from a standstill. On defense, the team benefits from the athletic lay-outs of players like Bonnie McPike and practices their zones for the Northwest weather. With so many returning players, this is the year that Sol is looking to earn one of the Northwest's three bids to Nationals.

Watch for Sol to match-up against regional competition for the first time at the Santa Barbara Invitational. The team will then play at President's Day and the Stanford Invite before heading into the UPA College Series.

Last year UC-Santa Cruz had enough women to field a B team as well. Playing practically savage for parts of 2004, it is unclear whether Santa Cruz B will have the numbers for a team again this year. In 2004 there was a big push to increase the number of rosters in the Northwest region to earn a size bid, and the Santa Cruz B team was one of the 16 teams that helped make that third bid to Nationals a reality. Unfortunately, with two strength bids and no possibility of a size bid this year, the lack of outside incentive for more rosters might mean that this B team doesn't materialize for the 2005 season.
