Tournament Preview
In 2006, Georgia, Florida, and Emory earned the top three spots at the Atlantic Coast Regionals and went on to play at the College Championships. These three teams are now back in action at the Florida Winter Classic, although the results might be a little different than at the regional tournament last April.
To start, Georgia will have a hard time repeating its regional victory this weekend. The team graduated a significant portion of its roster and will miss Katherine Wooten's throws and Shayne Crawford's speed. Florida's roster was also top heavy last season, and the team will have a number of new faces this year. Florida still made it to the finals of this past fall's Wolfpack tournament before bowing out to NC State. Additionally, having the club team Layuma qualify for the Club Championships can only have helped F.U.E.L. in terms of experience gained. Meanwhile, Emory seems to have come back stronger than ever for the new season. Emory turned heads at the championships when it upset Georgia 15-8 and almost completed a comeback against Florida in pre-quarters. As luck would have it, last year's biggest playmakers will all be back for Emory Luna, many of whom have improved during the club season while playing with Ozone and Rival. Emory's win at the competitive Classic City Classic can only foreshadow more tournament victories to come.
Georgia Tech, Charleston, South Florida, UNC-Wilmington, Richmond, Auburn, and Vanderbilt round out the rest of the competition. Good luck to all!
