OREGON FALL ULTIMATE DISC GAMES (OFUDG)Last NW Competition of the Fall
EUGENE, OR Washington made it to the finals for the second weekend in a row. OFUDG featured more cold, wet weather and the fields were rather muddy by the end of the weekend. However, teams brought some fire and there were a number of intense games at the tournament. The quarterfinals game between the split squads of UC-Berkeley and Western Washington was especially hard fought. Playing a lot of zone, Berkeley had built a lead of 12-8 or 12-9 before Western rallied and tied it up at 12-12. The cap was on, and Western managed to win the double-game point to go on to semis. This was now the second weekend in a row that Alyssa Weatherford had lead a split squad from Western to the semis. At OFUDG, Western pretty much rolled over for the club team Schwa in the semifinals. Technically, there were only four or five women from Schwa's true roster at the tournament and the rest were pick-ups. Two current Stanford players were among the pick-ups, as were the coaches of UW during the finals. With a small roster, Schwa played short-handed most of the tournament (playing 5 on 7 at some points) and still was hardly challenged. The other semifinals was a battle between Oregon and Washington. This was a rematch of the 9-8 quarterfinals game at Sundodgers that UW won. Oregon has a solid roster from top to bottom, but some players especially stood out this past weekend. Tobey Beaver is an experienced player and was handling the disc with confidence. Gordy was cutting well and freshman Chris Norton (#20) was explosive on defense. Washington's play was dominated by Claire Suver. Her hucks were accurate, even on stall nine, and she picked-up an impressive lay-out D against Oregon's first pass of a point. Melina Coogan also had some fire during this game and made a nice layout grab off of a deep throw. In the end, UW won the game by one. Schwa rolled in the finals, 13-2. Notably, Claire Suver didn't play in the finals due to a tweaked hamstring or UW might have put a few more points on the board. One of UW's coaches, Miranda Roth, scored the final goal of the game for Schwa with a lefty backhand huck. Tournament Preview BY: Miranda Roth This weekend brings us to the second Pacific Northwest tournament of the fall - Oregon Fall Ultimate Disc Games (OFUDG) in Eugene, OR. Portland's club team, Schwa, is seeded first and will probably have an unchallenged performance, mirroring that of Team Coyne at Sundodger. Cal's split squads are interestingly ranked second and third. OSU, Oregon and UW are seeded 4th-6th, in that order, seemingly ignoring results from last weekend. However, this seedings will show the UW vs. Lewis & Clark matchup in pool play that probably should have been the final at Sundodger. Look out for both Cal teams to drop the one seeds in their pools to Oregon and UW and maybe more upsets from the split Western Washington squads. Good luck to all! |
