Tournament Write-Up:

Georgia clinched its first tournament victory of the season by beating Florida (12-10) in the finals of Southerns. Playing in its home state, Georgia took its pool undefeated, albeit with a narrow win (7-6) against Cornell, and went on to play Northwestern (15-7) and Emory (14-11) in quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. Facing Emory in the semifinals was a test to the Hodawgs as Emory was the victor for both of the previous times these teams have faced off this season.

Even though Florida did not win this tournament, making it to finals is a testiment to the team's skill. Winning QCTU was not a fluke for FUEL. Florida was also undefeated in pool play, receiving its biggest challenge from the pool's third seed, Dartmouth, in a two-point game (11-9). Florida went on to beat Cornell in quarters (15-8) and NC State in semifinals (15-9).

Emory also won its pool with a 5-0 record, but it had three pool play games that were decided by three points or less. UNCW kept its capped game against Emory close (9-6), while Davidson was also not too far behind in its match-up (13-10). The real battle was between the one and two seeds in the pool when Emory and Tufts played in the last round of the day on Saturday. The game came down to double-game point with Emory putting in the last goal to win 13-12.

NC State caused quite a stir in its pool as it upset both higher-seeded Wake Forest and Williams. The game between Wake Forest and NC State came down to the wire with NC State squeaking out a narrow victory (11-10). NC State saw Davidson in the quarterfinals, winning 14-11, before it went on to lose to Florida in semis.

The four quarterfinal losers played in a consolation bracket to determine the 5th through 8th placements. Davidson took down Cornell (15-3) and then bested Wake Forest (11-5) to earn the 5th place spot. Wake Forest beat Northwestern (15-6).

In the B-bracket, Tufts won "Ninals" and finished in 9th place after a one point victory over its regional rival Dartmouth. Dartmouth had beat Vermont (13-3) and Columbia (14-6) to get to the game against Tufts. Tufts had beat Ohio State (14-3) and Yale (15-5).
