| This is the inaugural year for the UCLA Invite and it attracted twelve teams to the small tournament. Held the same weekend as the Stanford Invite Qualifier, it wasn't able to entice more teams to come down to Los Angeles, but it was a great way for some teams who were already assured a bid to the Stanford Invite as well as some local squads to fit more competitive games into their seasons. | |||

Tournament Write-up: (Information provided by Alex Korb) Due to injuries, Arizona was forced to drop out of the tournament at the last minute and a local pick-up club team filled the extra spot to allow the tournament to use a 12 team format. In Pool A UCLA won all of its pool play games, including its games against UC-Santa Barbara (10-6) and the LA club team. The LA club team finished second in the pool after it defeated UCSB. Pool B saw UC-Davis beat UC-Berkeley (13-9) to take the pool. They were unchallenged by any of the teams in their pool and Berkeley's closest game was a 13-7 victory over CalPoly-SLO. On Sunday, the two closest quarterfinalss game were between Berkeley and UCSB and then UC-Davis and USC. UC-Davis bested USC 13-7. The score was tight for the first part of the Berkeley-UCSB game until Berkeley pulled away (13-6 final score) and earned the right to play UCLA in semis. This was the third time these two teams have matched-up this season and UCLA came out ahead 13-8. In the other semifinal, UC-Davis played the LA club team and lost 12-10. The captains of the two teams agreed to allow UC-Davis to advance to the finals instead of the club team as this was primarily a college tournament. In the finals, UCLA jumped to a 3-0 lead before UC-Davis started to catch up. UC-Davis only came to the tournament with 12 players (leaving the team's rookies at home). UCLA was ahead 12-8 when the hard cap went on. So, although UC-Davis scored the last point (making it 12-9), UCLA won its first tournament of the season after now being in the finals three separate times.

| Pre-tournament Hype:
This small tournament will function as a way to help solidify some of the California schools' seeding for the next weekend's Stanford Invite. UC-Davis has wins over the three other top teams at the tournament. Despite its one point win over UCLA at the Santa Barbara Invite, UCLA has finished higher than Davis at both tournaments they've attended together (Santa Barbara and Trouble in Vegas). In fact, although UCLA made the finals of both tournaments, it has yet to go undefeated before finals. In Vegas, UCLA lost by one point to UC-Berkeley in pool play. Berkeley has traded games with UCLA and has a 1-1 record against the SW team. The Pie Queens have yet to beat UC-Davis, but their only match-up this season was a close game (9-7). UC-Santa Barbara has not posted any wins against these three top teams yet this season. It did play a close game against UCLA (9-7) at Vegas and should not be overlooked when its deep game is connecting. |
